The inaugural conference of the Jean Monnet Chair EUBIOETHICS, focusing on bioethics and European governance, led by Maria Fartunova-Michel, will take place at the Grand Salon of the City Hall of Nancy on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
Presentation: “Ethical Reflection: Bioethics leads to questioning the links between science, ethics, and ‘life’ in general, and humans in particular. Its legal regulation reflects these ethical considerations by framing, prohibiting, or legitimizing certain practices (abortion, euthanasia, assisted reproduction, artificial intelligence in medicine). As a deliberative right, bioethics relies on an open and ongoing citizen debate with national and local political decision-makers, national and local bodies to determine the key expectations and concerns of citizens and civil society. Interdisciplinary, this debate focuses on the figure of the ‘citizen-patient,’ his decision-making power and self-determination in light of the ethical challenges of scientific progress. More broadly, it situates bioethics in its connections with health and the environment, the top priorities of the European Commission’s ‘One Health’ strategy. Citizen debate significantly influences conventional methods of legal regulation and calls for a reconsideration of the role of health democracy in European governance.”
